Adopt A Filter
Ekal Vidyalaya is proud to support Adopt A Filter, a clean water initiative that offers a simple, effective solution to a challenge faced by many rural families. In several of the villages we have schools in, access to clean drinking water remains a daily concern. Families often rely on water from hand pumps. wells, or stored sources that may carry harmful contaminants. This leads to health problems, particularly for children and the elderly.
In 2024, Yash Gupta, then a 11th-grade student, reached out to us with a project he had been working on independently. He had spent time understanding the specific difficulties rural communities face when it comes to water access: not just the lack of filtration, but the deeper issues of affordability, cultural familiarity, and the absence of reliable electricity. He set out to design a solution that respected local customs, required no power supply, and stayed well within the cost range of low-income households.
Adopt A Filter combines traditional earthen matkas with a specially designed, non-electric filter that removes dirt, bacteria, and microplastics. Each unit provides 10 to 12 liters of clean water per day, without the need for electricity, plumbing, or complex upkeep. Families can use it easily with no special training, and because the system is built into a familiar matka, it fits naturally into rural homes and daily routines.
In December 2024, the project distributed 450 filters across several villages, directly benefiting over 2,000 people. The project continues to grow, with the next goal being to reach 1,000 filters in the coming months.
Ekal Vidyalaya believes in supporting practical, community-focused solutions that can make a lasting difference. Adopt A Filter is one such initiative. We are proud to partner with Yash and help bring clean, safe drinking water to more families across rural India, one household at a time.
